Melbourne is set to overtake Rome as the coffee capital of the world. Over the past five years we’ve seen everything from hole-in-the wall outlets to brazenly chic cafes spring up on all points of the compass, offering Melbournians a variety of brews made with beans from a variety of sources, and carefully selected by a new coterie of specialty coffee roasters.
Our love of coffee seems to know no end.
But there’s a down side…
A recent report on the ABC highlighted the devastating impact our love of coffee is having on the environment. Not the coffee itself, naturally, but the disposable paper cup it often comes in.
Head into the CBD on any morning of the working week and you’ll see hordes of people lined up at a café in the lobby of their office building, and ordering their caffe lattes, double shots of espresso, long blacks, flat whites or whatever’s their pleasure in a paper cup that they can take into work.
It is estimated Australians use 1 billion disposable coffee cups each year, second only to plastic bottles as the largest contributor to waste. What’s more, contrary to what you might believe, most paper coffee cups are not biodegradable and can take more than 20 years to decompose.
And just think about this for a second, the 20 to 50 cents surcharge for the convenience of taking your coffee to your desk means you’re actually paying to create office trash.
What’s the solution?
It’s very simple. The BYO reusable coffee cup! They are available in a wide range of sizes and styles to suit anyone’s coffee preference. And they’re also made to barista standards.
Reusable cups are the only sustainable option, and companies, whether large or small, would do well to provide office staff with BYO coffee cups, which can be branded to further encourage staff to reduce their environmental footprint.
By switching to BYO cups you’ll be doing yourself and the world a big favour—and our love of coffee won’t be driven into the ground!
